Is it harder to learn to play a musical instrument or learn a foreign language?

futurelaw93 asked:

I am thinking about developing a new hobby, and I have narrowed it down to learning a musical instrument or learning a foreign language. I have about an hour a day to commit to my new hobby. Which one would you suggest and which instrument/language should I look into?

language is harder, definitely. but language is also more useful. latin is a good language to start with, if you decide language. piano is a good starter for music.

if you have had any previous experience in either field then i would use your experiences (how easy/hard u found it) as a starting point from which to base your decision.
i’m not at all musically minded but i would suggest german or italian as languages

A musical instrument, because you have to coordinate your fingers with translating the notes on the page to the keys on your instrument. Learning a foreign language only requires translation of words, and most people already know how to speak.

definetly a musical instrument. with the proper training, it will take a couple of months. i am from south korea and learning english took around a year or so

Neither. Both can be considered to be their own sort of languages, and it took me longer to master the piano than to be able to speak both French and Spanish fluently.

Learning to play a musical instrument is harder. Think of this: When you are conceived, the language your parents speak is a foreign language to you. Yet, you master it after a few years. You master the language before you are even old enough to go to school. If you study a foreign language the right way, it can be really easy.

A foreign language is definitely harder to learn than an instrument. In musical notation (language) there are only 13 different notes you need to learn. Once you’ve mastered them, you know the whole language.

With languages, you may learn general, commonly-used words, but it takes a long time to master a language. Think about English. There are even words that you don’t know. Think about learning all the the same words you know now in English in a different language. It would take forever, and it does.
